World Cup Update

It’s been nearly eight years since the U.S. Men’s National Team last took the pitch in a World Cup match, but it looks like that excruciating wait is nearly over 🤞

After Sunday’s 5-1 win over Panama, the U.S. is on the cusp of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The team is set to face off against Costa Rica tonight, and as long as they avoid a losing margin of six goals, their spot will be secured ahead of Friday’s draw

• While the USA has reached the doorstep of its World Cup return, surprising teams and big names around the globe have come up just short. After a stunning upset at the hands of North Macedonia, Italy, the winner of last year’s Euro 2020, will miss their second consecutive World Cup tournament 😳

• In a controversial PK shootout (peep the lasers on his face) against Senegal yesterday, Mo Salah’s shot sailed over the crossbar, as his Egyptian team was officially knocked out

Norway, the Czech Republic, Nigeria, and the Ivory Coast are just a few other World Cup staples whose stars won’t be able to shine on soccer’s biggest stage this year, with more eliminations still to come. But barring an unforeseen disaster today, fortunately the USMNT won’t be on that list again 🙌

USA vs. Costa Rica Preview 

Even with a World Cup spot all but locked up, the U.S. undoubtedly wants to end their CONCACAF qualifying run on a high note. Here’s how the lines are looking ahead of the national team’s showdown with Costa Rica 👇

• Potentially feeling the weight of the expectations, Pulisic’s play has been inconsistent for the national team of late. Prior to Sunday’s match, he had two goals and no assists through eight qualifiers

• The captain's breakout performance couldn't have come at a better time, but can he and the rest of the team keep the momentum going against a tough rival today?

Even with a six-goal loss being incredibly unlikely, this is still an important statement match for the USMNT. If they can build off perhaps the best performance of the Gregg Berhalter era, international expectations could reach the next level 😤
