Friday's Sweet 16 Preview

Yesterday gave us a thrilling first taste of Sweet 16 action, and tonight, the other four Elite 8 spots are up for grabs in the East and Midwest Regions. Take a look at the full schedule of games 👇

  • (7:09 PM ET) #15 Saint Peter's vs. #3 Purdue

  • (7:29 PM ET) #4 Providence vs. #1 Kansas

  • (9:39 PM ET) #8 UNC vs. #4 UCLA

  • (9:59 PM ET) #11 Iowa State vs. #10 Miami

Play gets underway in style with everyone’s favorite Cinderella, Saint Peter’s, looking to continue their magical run against heavily-favored Purdue. As 12.5-point underdogs, the Peacocks may be facing long odds, but here’s to hoping their incredible story continues 🤞

Spotlight: UNC vs. UCLA

As adamantly as I’ll be rooting for Saint Peter’s to pull off the upset bid tonight, the matchup that’s piqued my interest the most is between two of the most decorated programs in college basketball history. Check out the lines ahead of the rare meeting between North Carolina and UCLA 👇

#8 UNC vs. #4 UCLA (subject to change)

  • Spread: UCLA -2

  • Moneyline: UCLA -135 (bet $135, win $100), UNC +114 (bet $100, win $114)

  • Over/Under: 141.5

With 17 NCAA titles and 39 Final Four appearances between the two of them, both powerhouses are very familiar with reaching the tournament’s second weekend

  • Surprisingly, the two teams have faced each other in March on just two previous occasions. Lew Alcindor, now known as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, led the Bruins to a title over the Tar Heels in 1968, but UNC got their revenge in a second round game in 1989

Matchup number 3 between the blue-bloods may not feature the NBA’s all-time leading scorer like the first showdown did, but there’s impressive star-power nonetheless. In UNC’s case, the right guys are getting hot at the right time

  • First-Team All-ACC big man Armando Bacot has been reliable as ever for the Tar Heels, putting up consecutive double-doubles in wins over Marquette and the region’s top seed, Baylor

  • However, even Bacot has been overshadowed by the explosion of teammate Brady Manek. The former four-year Oklahoma starter notched 28 points in the first round, and was well on his way to surpassing that total in the second round until a very questionable ejection 😫

For the Bruins, it’s been business as usual for two of their three All-PAC-12 selections. Tyger Campbell has paced the team in scoring in both wins, while Jaime Jaquez Jr. has extended his double-digit scoring streak to 10 games. However, UCLA is still waiting for the final member of that trio, Johnny Juzang, to get going

  • Juzang burst onto the scene in last year’s tournament, averaging 22.8 points across the six games of UCLA’s improbable run. This year, he’s putting up just 11.5 PPG while shooting 1-5 from deep. The typically sweet-shooting wing hasn’t hit 20 points in a game since February 8th 😴

The Bruins have proved they can win even if some of their stars aren’t shining, but they’ll need all the offensive firepower they can get tonight. While they’ve been leaky on the defensive end, the Tar Heels are putting up 94 PPG so far 🤯

Trivia question: UCLA is the all-time leader in men's titles with 11, while UNC checks in at third with 6. Which program ranks second? (answer below)

Midwest Mayhem

Now let's check in on the Midwest, a region with two of the more interesting Sweet 16 matchups. Here’s the action going down at the United Center in Chicago tonight 👇

  • Spread: Kansas -7.5

  • Moneyline: Kansas -333, Providence +265

  • Over/Under: 141.5

It seems as though “lucky” Providence has been written off time and time again this season, and although they haven’t had the most arduous tournament journey so far, they absolutely look like one of the nation’s top-16 teams 😤

  • After cruising past a pair of double-digit seeds in South Dakota State and Richmond, the Friars, a preseason afterthought, will have their shocking season put to the ultimate test against the Jayhawks

  • It’s no surprise Kansas entered the second weekend with the second-best odds (+525) to win the whole thing. Bill Self’s crew has rattled off seven straight wins, and the emergence of transfer Remy Martin, whose 17.5 PPG in the tournament doubles his season average, makes them all the more dangerous

Self has made it a habit of taking care of business in the Sweet 16, with a lifetime record of 10-3 in the round. This year’s Jayhawks have a great shot at adding another victory to that tally 💪

  • Spread: Miami -2.5

  • Moneyline: Miami -145, Iowa State +120

  • Over/Under: 133

Even though neither team is a mid-major, I’m still a sucker for the ever-rare meeting between a pair of double-digit seeds in the Sweet 16 🙌

  • Expectations weren't high for either squad entering the tournament, and rightfully so. Miami finished middle of the pack in what was thought to be a weak ACC, while Iowa State's final tune-up game was a 72-41 beatdown at the hands of Texas Tech 😬

  • The Cyclone offense still hasn't woken up, but their smothering defense held LSU and Wisconsin to just 51.5 PPG

For the Hurricanes, the story so far has been the strong play of Isaiah Wong. The guard had a mildly disappointing regular season relative to expectations, but he's efficiently paced Miami in scoring in each game with a pair of 20+ outings 🔥

For My Parlay Gurus

I already mentioned the supposed "down year" from the ACC, but with three teams from the conference reaching the Sweet 16, it may be time to reevaluate. Unfortunately, I think the Tar Heels' journey ends tonight, but I'm sticking with the Hurricanes to continue dancing. Check it out 👇

  • UCLA -2 vs. UNC: -110

  • Miami -2.5 vs. Iowa State: -110

$100 on this parlay would net $264 — if we hit, make sure to email [email protected] for $100*. First come, first serve 😉

Trivia answer: Kentucky has the second-most men's national titles with 8, including their most recent championship coming in 2012. Duke and Indiana are tied for fourth with 5 titles apiece
