Where Will KD Land?

After one of the most disappointing and short-lived superteam runs in NBA history, the Nets appear to be blowing it up. Kevin Durant has requested a trade out of Brooklyn, and named Phoenix and Miami among his top desired destinations. However, KD is under contract for another four years, so it's hard to see his preferences being factored too heavily into the trade 🤔

  • Brooklyn is looking to land the best possible mix of future and present pieces, after completely emptying their asset trove in the ill-fated Harden trade

  • The after-effects of that trade put the Nets in a precarious spot, as they can't "tank" effectively with all their picks belonging to Houston (sound familiar?)

Brooklyn might still look to mend fences, but right now KD appears headed for greener pastures. Let's take a look at some potential destinations 👇

Kevin Durant's Next Team Odds (subject to change)

  • Phoenix Suns: -140 (bet $140, win $100)

  • Toronto Raptors: +250 (bet $100, win $250)

  • Brooklyn Nets: +850

  • Chicago Bulls: +1200

  • Portland Trail Blazers: +1200

Trivia Answer: Of all the active players in the NBA, Kevin Durant has the third-most career points with 25,526. Who ranks No. 1 and No. 2? (answer below)

Potential Landing Spots

Since Durant's bombshell trade request, the Suns have held steady as the odds-on favorite to land his services. Brooklyn has requested Devin Booker in any potential deal, but that's clearly a non-starter for Phoenix, who will have to piece together an enticing, yet reasonable package 👀

  • The obvious starting point is Deandre Ayton, who already seemed primed to leave Phoenix in restricted free agency, and has been linked to Brooklyn

  • Beyond Ayton, the trade package would likely include Mikal Bridges and Cameron Johnson, along with a bevy of draft picks

If Brooklyn is sour on Ayton's potential, it's hard to find a better suitor than Toronto. The Raptors are no stranger to trading for unhappy superstars, though they would clearly like to retain Durant for longer than Kawhi Leonard. It's clear that Masai Ujiri and the Raptors could put together an incredibly intriguing offer 👇

  • Brooklyn will be pushing for reigning ROTY Scottie Barnes in the deal, but if he's not included, than Pascal Siakam surely will be

  • OG Anunoby or Gary Trent Jr. are likely salary fillers in any deal, and either could function as a very useful piece for the Nets 🤝

Meanwhile In Brooklyn...

The cards all lie in Brooklyn's hands, and with so many years left on Durant's contract, there is clearly hope that the situation can be resolved. The biggest question mark in this pursuit is the mercurial Kyrie Irving, whose antics have largely poisoned the Nets' situation over the past two years 😬

  • If KD and Kyrie still want to play together, bringing the duo back could be an option. However, Brooklyn may prefer trading Kyrie for assets that could potentially convince Durant to stay

  • The problem then rests in Kyrie's unique ability to torpedo his trade value despite his otherworldly talent, as the only likely taker would be the Lakers

If the Nets can sort out the Kyrie drama, it's not hard to see them resuming title contention with Durant in the fold. They would finally see how Ben Simmons' high-level playmaking and defense complement KD's unmatched scoring ability, and Brooklyn's moves this offseason have surely signaled a desire to remain competitive 😤

  • The Nets traded a first round pick for Utah's Royce O'Neale

  • Then they went and signed free-agent TJ Warren, who was a beast in the bubble but hasn't played much since, and re-signed Patty Mills

All of this is for nothing if Durant is determined to leave, but it's certainly in Brooklyn's best interest to retain him if possible 🙏

For My Parlay Gurus

Despite all this free agency drama, there's still basketball to be played, and it starts with NBA Summer League. Chet Holmgren was nothing short of spectacular in his debut for OKC, evoking some all-time greats with his dominant performance. I like Chet to carry the Thunder to another W, with Memphis beating Utah. Check it out 👇

  • Thunder ML vs. Sixers: -110

  • Grizzlies ML vs. Jazz: -440
