The NBA's Best 6th-Man 😴

Amidst all of the recent MVP discourse from guys like JJ Redick and Kendrick Perkins, we turn our attention to one of the more underrated NBA accolades β€” the 6th Man of the Year award. Depth is key, and there's two guys who have stood out all season πŸ€ (3 min read)

NBA 6th Man of the Year

As we approach the NBA postseason, the annual MVP discussion begins to heat up. Voter fatigue, analytics and whether or not someone "deserves" the award all get brought up by analysts in one way or another. For the sake of it, check out this interesting thread on the way this current MVP campaign has been covered and dissected πŸ‘‡

Today though we're going to get into the two-man race for the 6MOY award, an accolade that is usually reserved for one of the most exciting roles in the league - instant bench buckets. If the last decade of 6MOY winners suggests anything, it's that the award may be an old man's game. Since the 2013-14 season, only two winners have been below 28 β€” last year Tyler Herro secured the award at 22, while Montrezl Harrell won at 26 πŸ‘€

  • Tyler Herro (2021-22): 22

  • Jordan Clarkson (2020-2021): 28

  • Montrezl Harrell (2019-2020): 26

  • Lou Williams (2018-2019): 32

  • Lou Williams (2017-2018): 31

  • Eric Gordon (2016-2017): 28

  • Jamal Crawford (2015-2016): 35

  • Lou Williams (2014-2015): 28

  • Jamal Crawford (2013-2014): 33

This wouldn't be a 6MOY-focused newsletter without highlighting Lou Williams and Jamal Crawford, both of them are tied for winning the award a record three times each. Crawford was a serious problem πŸ’₯

This season is one of the closer races in recent memory, but only between two guys. Tyrese Maxey and Bobby Portis started out hot, but have likely missed too many games to win the award. Let's break it down πŸ“

Two-Man Race

The best end-of-season award races are ones that involve two deserving players. While there was some chatter over Russell Westbrook following his trade to and then subsequent waive from the Jazz, he fell out of the running a few weeks ago. Names like Norman Powell and Christian Wood have also been thrown around, but none of those players have been able to keep up. Instead, Malcolm Brogdon, who entered the picture as early as December, and more recently, Immanuel Quickley, have sprinted ahead of the pack ✌️

Malcolm Brogdon might have already locked up the award if it weren't for injuries, as he's missed 11 games. His efficiency is unparalleled, with 49 FG%/46.1 3PT%/89 FT% shooting splits on the season. Since January 1st, Brogdon has shot an absurd 48.7% from deep

Quickley, on the other hand, was a long shot to win 6MOY up until recently, but he's now the favorite (depending on the outlet). He's been on a tear as the Knicks have gotten hot, and his deadly floater game is at 58.6% since the new year πŸ‘Œ

NBA 6MOY Odds (subject to change)

  • Immanuel Quickley: -110 (bet $110, win $100)

  • Malcolm Brodgon: +110 (bet $100, win $110)

It really doesn't get closer than this, and if I had to guess, Quickley seems like he's seized control of the narrative surrounding the award. It helps that his career-high came during a matchup against his direct competition. This pretty much sums up the race πŸ’¨

Trivia Question: Can you name the only player to win both 6th Man of the Year and MVP?

For My Parlay Gurus

With Brogdon and the Celtics playing tonight vs. the Blazers, we had to throw them in our parlay. Boston has been a little iffy over the last few weeks, but I like them to cover tonight. I'm taking the Cavs as well - I like their elite defense to bother an offensively-stunted Miami team πŸ‘‡

  • Cavs -1.5 @ Heat: -110

  • Celtics -10.5 vs. Blazers: -110

$100 on this bet would win you $264 β€” if we hit, make sure you email [email protected] for a chance to win up to $100*. Many will enter, only some will win πŸ˜‰
