Sub .500 MNF Matchup 😏

It hasn't been a year to remember for the NFL schedule makers, and this week's installment of Monday Night Football isn't as exciting as one would hope. Still, there's plenty of intrigue to go around, let's talk Jeff Saturday and Kenny Pickett 🏈 (3 min read)

Are You Watching?

I don't know about you, but seeing Steelers vs. Colts on the docket for Monday Night Football didn't exactly inspire a ton of excitement. Both squads sit squarely below .500, and neither seem to be gunning for a playoff berth at this point. It seems that the focus for the rest of the season in Pittsburgh and Indianapolis is to assess the current rosters and leadership, and use this assessment to rebuild in the offseason 🧱

  • For the Colts, the major question mark has been the shocking hire of Jeff Saturday as the Interim HC. The former Colts has virtually no coaching experience, but has built up credibility in Indianapolis through his stellar playing career and promising media stint thereafter

  • The results have been intriguing so far (1-1), but Saturday still has a lot to prove

For Pittsburgh, the decision to lean into a full rebuild was made early on, following the lackluster play of QB Mitch Trubisky. The team thrust first round pick Kenny Pickett into the starting role, and he expectedly looked like a deer in the headlights through his first few games. But, he has started to minimize his mistakes and flash the potential that merited his lofty draft selection 💨

  • Spread: Colts -2.5

  • Moneyline: Colts -144 (bet $144, win $100), Steelers +122 (bet $100, win $122)

  • Over/Under: 39.5

Team Recaps

Calling the Saturday hiring controversial would be putting it lightly — a lot of seasoned coaches felt snubbed by the selection of a former player and media personality who had never coached beyond the high school level. Saturday's main appeal was obviously as a Colts legend and a master motivator, and to his credit he has seemed to capture the locker room in just two games. Indianapolis won Saturday's debut vs. Las Vegas, and kept things surprisingly close with the world-beating Eagles last week 👀

  • Saturday's first big move was putting QB Matt Ryan back to the starting lineup, who was previously benched in a puzzling move

  • The 37-year-old former MVP has proven far superior to backup Sam Ehlinger, leading a game-winning drive in his first game back under center. Matty Ice even showed off the wheels on a career-best 39 yard rush 💨

On the other side, Pittsburgh has leaned into the youth movement with Pickett under center, and it's hard to question that decision. The Steelers need a long-term answer at QB following the retirement of future Hall-of-Famer Ben Roethlisberger, and Trubiskly was clearly not that. Pickett has already begun to form a promising connection with dynamic rookie WR George Pickens 🔥

  • Pickett has decent weapons to spread the ball to in Pickens, Diontae Johnson and Pat Freiermuth, and has begun to learn from the rookie mistakes that plagued him early

  • On the defensive end, reigning DPOY T.J. Watt has returned from a pectoral injury suffered in Week 1, and is already transforming the defense. Watt makes the type of game-changing defensive plays that alway gives Pittsburgh a chance to win ⭐️

Trivia Question: Despite missing two games and parts of three others, T.J. tied the NFL record for sacks last season with 22.5. Whose record did he tie?

For My Parlay Gurus

The spread reflects a very even game, with the Colts' edge only coming from their home field advantage. I like Saturday to add to his promising start and cover spread in a still-competitive victory, with Ryan's veteran savvy outclassing Pickett's youth in a throwback performance. Take a look 👇

  • Colts -2.5 vs. Steelers: -115

  • Matt Ryan OVER 1.5 TD Passes: +126
