NBA Coach of the Year
Last season, Brad Stevens was the opening night favorite to win the NBA’s Coach of the Year award at +900. Instead of taking home the honor, he moved into the Celtics’ front office, while new Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau won despite starting out with +3000 odds
This season’s top favorites feature some heavy hitters from past seasons, but includes just one former winner of the award
Steve Nash, Nets: +850
Erik Spoelstra, Heat: +900
Billy Donovan, Bulls: +1000
Quinn Snyder, Jazz: +1100
Steve Kerr, Warriors: +1100
Trivia question: which of these coaches have won Coach of the Year before? (answer at the bottom)
Steve Nash is favored to win the award, with his Nets expected to win the Eastern Conference (+105) and an NBA Championship (+240). Though his team’s success will certainly come down to the availability of his Big Three, his offensive ingenuity can help guide them to the promised land
The Runners-Up
Historically, the NBA’s Coach of the Year award has gone to the leader of a team with one of the NBA’s best records. Only twice since the 1995-96 season has the Coach of the Year won fewer than 65% of their games and still won the award
Sam Mitchell, 2006-07 Toronto Raptors (.573)
Tom Thibodeau, 2020-21 New York Knicks (.569)
Quinn Snyder and Monty Williams, the head coaches of the Jazz and Suns, were each named finalists in last year’s Coach of the Year voting, but ultimately lost to Thibs. Considering Utah and Phoenix were the top two seeds in the West, if either coach is able to recreate some of last season’s magic, voters might feel the need to reward them for cultivating such a sustained quality of play year-over-year
Quinn Snyder: +1100
Monty Williams: +1200
The Dark Horse
Although the Minnesota Timberwolves were the third-worst team in the West last season, they’ve shown signs of life since hiring Chris Finch in February of last season
They went 7-24 through their first 31 games coached by Ryan Saunders (.225 winning percentage)
Then went 16-25 in their final 41 games coached by Finch (.390 winning percentage)
Along with Finch’s first full season, Karl-Anthony Towns’ sustained health and Anthony Edwards’ emergence as a budding star, the T’Wolves at might be friskier than their past records might suggest
At +4000, a bet on Chris Finch makes for a fun sleeper pick if you believe the Wolves have a shot at sneaking into the playoffs
