Spain vs France Preview

Another great 4th of July weekend is officially in the books, and I hope that while you were all stuffing your faces with hot dogs like the banished king Joey Chestnut, you also managed to catch some Euros action…because the quarterfinals had its fair share of wild endings 🍿

  • Offense wasn’t especially abundant in this round, but we were treated to four nail-biters across Friday and Saturday. Two were won in PKs, another was won in extra time, and the other featured a second-half comeback 😳

And then there were four. Before the semifinal round kicks off today, here’s how title odds are looking 👇

  • Spain: +180

  • England: +260

  • France: +270

  • Netherlands: +500

Since we last checked in, Spain has usurped England as the favorite to secure their record fourth European Championship (and their third since 2008) 🏆

  • Emerging from group play with a tourney-high nine points and a +5 goal differential certainly helps their case, as does their dominant 4-1 win over Georgia in the Round of 16 😤

  • Friday’s battle against the host nation was about as tough of a test as it gets, and after a crushing 89th minute equalizer by the Germans, Spain looked seriously vulnerable…until Mikel Merino’s game-winner in the 119th minute ⬇️

It doesn’t get much easier for Spain moving forward, with the perennial powerhouse France up next. The Blues had to sweat it out in the quarterfinals as well, needing PKs to take down Portugal after 120+ minutes of scoreless action 😴

France has not been playing their best soccer lately; they didn’t even win their group, and their scoring output has been historically bad for a team at this stage in the tournament 😳

But on the plus side, they’ve also allowed just one goal so far (a PK from Poland). And when you’ve got perhaps the best player in the world suiting up, it seems like only a matter of time before more balls start finding the back of the net…if his mask stops giving him trouble 😅
