Shohei Ohtani has 99 career HRs, pushing to become the third Japanese-born player to reach 100 dingers in the MLB. Oh, and he's also pitching tonight ๐Ÿ (4 min read)

Major League Baseball Roundup

After a delayed start, MLB players are finally rounding into shape. With a limited Spring Training, it's taken a few extra weeks for hitters to really see the ball. However, the biggest conversation in the game has been the new baseballs, which are considered to be lighter and therefore harder to drive out of the park. For a full read on that drama, check out this article by Kyle Glaser

Still, a few players have emerged as simply unstoppable no matter the conditions ๐Ÿ‘‡

  • Manny Machado is on track for his first MVP, currently holding the National League's slash-line Triple Crown, with top marks in average, on-base percentage, and slugging

  • After 600 major league games, Aaron Judge finally hit his first walk-off HR last night. He now leads the MLB in HRs (10)

  • Ronald Acuna Jr. shook off a slow first week after recovering from a torn ACL with a pair of homers and five (!) steals. He even earned the King's praise for his "Silencer" celly after the second one

  • Rowdy Tellez has exploded out of his role as a platoon starter, becoming the Brewers' everyday first baseman

  • Nasty Nestor Cortes Jr. looks to be emerging as the game's most unconventional ace, taking a no-hit bid into the 8th in his most recent start

Rays vs. Angels Preview

In Anaheim, two of the game's top strikeout pitchers face-off for what should be an epic duel. 25-year-old sophomore Shane McClanahan has massive swing-and-miss stuff, including three elite off-speed pitches backed by a fastball capable of clipping 100 MPH ๐Ÿ’จ

  • Batters are whiffing at each of his above average breaking changeup, curveball, and slider more than 40% of the time

  • Right now, he's striking batters out more often than 94% of MLB pitchers

Tonight, he'll get a rare chance to pitch to the other team's ace, as his opposition is baseball's lone true unicorn, two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani

  • Ohtani's been mostly excellent, with one blow-up against the Rangers bumping his still solid ERA to 3.08

  • He's throwing harder than ever with a fastball almost two MPH faster than last season

After crushing 46 homers last year, Ohtani started out relatively cold, but has seriously picked things up as of late ๐Ÿงข

Astros vs. Twins Preview

After their respective aces squared-off yesterday, with the Astros' Justin Verlander besting the Twins' rookie Joe Ryan, each team's number two will toe the slab today ๐Ÿค

For the Astros, Jose Urquidy will shoulder the innings-load, as he hopes to lower his 4.56 ERA. However, his batted-ball result-driven expected ERA (xERA) of 6.18 suggests he's been even worse ๐Ÿ‘‡

  • He attacks the strike zone more than almost anybody, walking batters just 3.7% of the time, which places him among the top 10% of all pitchers

  • But, he's basically throwing batting practice, getting hit harder than most, without striking many batters out

Opposite him, the Twins will send out former All-Star Chris Archer for his sixth start of the year. Despite spending his mid-twenties as a fireballing strikeout machine armed with a wipeout slider, a myriad of injuries derailed his once undeniable ascent to stardom ๐Ÿค•

  • Archer missed all of 2020 with thoracic outlet syndrome, an injury that almost always precedes a considerable loss of velocity

  • He pitched in just six games in 2021, spending time on the IL with forearm and hip injuries

He's cruised out to a 3.26 ERA through the first part of his 2022 campaign, apparently showing flashes of the old Chris Archer, but all of the underlying metrics suggest that we should expect more mediocre showings moving forwards

  • Spread: Astros -1.5

  • Moneyline: Astros -118, Twins +100

  • O/U: 7.5 total runs
