Week 3 Thursday Night Football

Tonight, we’ll see Sam Darnold and the Panthers (2-0) take on Davis Mills and the Texans (1-1). Yes, you read that correctly. Davis Mills. The third round rookie quarterback will make his first career start in primetime due to Tyrod Taylor’s hamstring injury

  • Spread: Panthers -8

  • Money-line: Panthers -400 (bet $400, win $100), Texans +310

  • Over/Under: 43

Who is Davis Mills?

With Tyrod Taylor sidelined, Davis Mills is officially QB1 for the Texans. That’s not a name that many NFL fans are familiar with, so let me help you out

  • High School: Mills was a five-star recruit and the top-ranked QB in the 2017 class. He was ranked ahead of several other big-name players, including Tua Tagovailoa (No. 53 overall prospect) and Mac Jones (No. 162 prospect)

  • College: After redshirting his freshman season at Stanford, Mills played in just 14 games – starting only 11 in his final two seasons

  • NFL: Mills was drafted in the third round (67th overall pick) by the Texans in 2021. He replaced Tyrod Taylor in Week 2 vs the Browns, finishing 8-of-18 for 102 yards through the air with a TD and an INT

Betting note: With the announcement of Mills becoming QB1 for the Texans, his Offensive Rookie of the Year odds jumped from +6500 in Week 2 to +3500 in Week 3 đź‘€

The Over/Under for TNF

Now that we know all about rookie Davis Mills, let’s take a look at the Carolina defense he’ll be up against

  • Fewest yards allowed per game (190)

  • Fewest points allowed per game (10.5)

  • League-leading 10 sacks

On the other side, the Panthers’ offense hasn’t been that explosive. They’re averaging 22.5 PPG and have only scored five total TDs

With these two teams coming off a short week, I think betting the under at 43 pts is a good call
