Man Down

Since going on an 11-game winning streak, the longest in the Western Conference this season, the Grizzlies have won just seven of 17 games, struggling to recapture the rhythm they had at the start of the new year. However, much of that backslide has come concurrent with the loss of their bruising big, Steven Adams πŸ’ͺ

Adams, sidelined with a strained knee, has been out since January 23, five days after the Lakers ended the Grizzlies' winning streak. Although he's not the team's biggest star, his physical presence in the middle of the floor has been sorely missed. These are the Grizzlies' five best players in terms of how the team plays with them versus when they are off the court πŸ‘‡

  • Jaren Jackson Jr. +12.1

  • Steven Adams +7.8

  • Desmond Bane +6.6

  • Ja Morant +6.0

  • Dillon Brooks +4.5

Although plus-minus does not measure raw basketball talent, it does do a good job representing how important any particular player is to a team's general construct. Based on this list, it is reasonable to say that the Grizzles are much better off when at least one of their starting frontcourt is in the game. Though that may have a bit to do with the relative weakness of their backup bigs, that doesn't mean the team hasn't missed Adams' interior presence in recent weeks πŸ“‰

Tonight, they have one of the toughest covers in the league in Nikola Jokic, a task only made taller without one of their twin towers πŸ™οΈ

  • Spread: Nuggets -5.5

  • Moneyline: Nuggets -235 (bet $235, win $100), Grizzlies +194 (bet $100, win $194)

  • O/U: 234.5

Threepeat?

Before the All-Star break, it certainly felt like the NBA's MVP award was up in the air for at least a few familiar faces. Since then, the Nuggets' centerpiece has all but locked up the league's most prestigious individual honor for the third straight season πŸ†

Here's how Vegas expects things to shake out come awards szn (odds here)

  • Nikola Jokic: -340

  • Joel Embiid: +700

  • Giannis Antetokounmpo: +750

  • Every other candidate < +2500

With a huge margin between himself and the other two viable candidates, Jokic has a good chance of becoming the first player to win the award in three straight seasons since Larry Bird did it from 1984-1986 πŸ₯‡πŸ₯‡πŸ₯‡

Trivia Question: Who are the other two players in NBA history to win the MVP in three consecutive seasons?

For My Parlay Gurus

With a compromised front-court for Jokic to go against, the Nuggets should make light work of the Grizzlies. If you like the Nuggets to cover as much as I do, consider combining that with a much-needed Blazers win in Atlanta to give them a chance at a play-in tourney spot πŸ‘‡

  • Nuggets -5.5 vs. Grizzlies: -110

  • Blazers ML @ Hawks: +235

$100 on this bet would win you $540 β€” if we hit, make sure you email [email protected] for a chance to win up to $100*. Many will enter, only some will win πŸ˜‰
