The 150th Open Championship

We've made it to the fourth and final major championship of the golf season, and it will be ending in style, as The Open Championship returns to the home of golf, The Old Course at St Andrews. In what is sure to be an exciting week, almost a dozen golfers come in with solid form and a legitimate shot at taking home the Claret JugĀ šŸ†

For context, The Open circles back home to The Old Course roughly every five years. Take a look at the previous seven St Andrews winners dating back 52 years šŸ‘‡

  • Zach Johnson (2015)

  • Louis Oosthuizen (2010)

  • Tiger Woods (2005, 2000)

  • John Daly (1995)

  • Nick Faldo (1990)

  • Seve Ballesteros (1984)

  • Jack Nicklaus (1978, 1970)

Rightfully so, Rory McIlroy enters the week as the betting favorite. The future HOFer has finished in the Top-20 in all of his past 7 starts, and also enters the tournament inside the Top-10 for most key stats. It's tough to argue with him being the favorite, as he looks to claim his second Claret Jug. Below are odds for the top six golfersĀ šŸ‘‡

  • Rory McIlroy: +1000 (bet $100 to win $1000)

  • Xander Schauffele: +1400

  • Jordan Spieth: +1500

  • Jon Rahm: +1600

  • Scottie Scheffler: +1600

  • Matthew Fitzpatrick: +1800

Tiger Returns To Scotland

It's rare to have a true GOAT in a sport, but that is the case with golf. Tiger Woods is the greatest of all time, and he'll make an emotional return this week to the spot where he has won two Open Championships. Less than two years removed from the car accident that almost cost him his leg, this will be his third major championship since, and his results have been mixed šŸ‘‡

  • 47th at The Masters

  • Withdrawn after a made cut at the PGA Championship

  • Didn't play at the US open

With the career he has had and the injuries he has overcome, just seeing him on the course is a victory for all golf fans. But can he find his way into contention this week? There is an argument to be made šŸ‘€

  • St Andrews is by far the flattest and easiest course to walk of the courses he's played since his comeback, making it an easier week on his leg

  • He has won on two different occasions at The Old Course, 2000 and 2005, matching Jack Nicklaus as the only two to accomplish this in the last 50 years

  • Tiger holds the tournament scoring record at St Andrews when he shot -19 in 2000

Tiger has brushed off the idea that he is retiring after this week, but it may very well be the last time we see him play The Open at St Andrews. Nothing would be better than seeing him near the top of the leaderboard on Sunday, and with betting odds of +6500 to win, it would definitely give you something emotional to cheer for šŸ…

Other Outright Contenders

There's a numbers of golfers further down the betting board that could find themselves in position to hoist the trophy come Sunday. Whether it's good form or course fit, there's some definite value to be had outside of the Top-6 in odds šŸ’¤

Max Homa (+4500): Homa enters the week on a streak of 11 straight made cuts, and has now entered the Top-20 in Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in his career. A pairing with Tiger Woods for the first two days will definitely highlight if he has what it takes to contend šŸ“ˆ

Will Zalatoris (+2600):Ā In what is becoming normal to say, Zalatoris found himself in contention of another major championship after posting a 2nd place finish at the US Open. He is somehow always is in the mix come Sunday, and a win this time around would make historyĀ šŸ‘€

Sam BurnsĀ (+4000): The 11th ranked golfer in the world has three wins on the PGA Tour this season, second most only behind Scheffler (4). Burns is still looking to capture his first major, but with finishes of 27th and 20th at his last two, it is only a matter of time before the breakthrough win. Plus he's already out thereĀ getting love on social media

For My Parlay Gurus

Since we talked about them above, might as well get some action on the three golfers further down the board that I like. Parlaying together some Top-40s sounds like a fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon, so grab a Guinness, some fish & chips and kick back and enjoy a fantastic week of golf ā›³ļø

  • Max Homa Top-40: -130
