🎾 French Open Check-In
You know times are truly changing when Nadal isn't in contention at the French Open. Can Djokovic keep holding off Father Time for the repeat, or will the recent youth movement continue? And can an American finally make some noise? A lot of questions 🤔 (2 min read)
French Open Check-In
Few things make me feel as old as seeing French Open title odds without Rafael Nadal at the top of the list. But with 2024 Roland Garros action officially underway, the 14-time champ has already been sent packing 😳
In one of the more noteworthy opening matchups you’ll ever see at a major, Nadal was defeated in straight sets by one of the tournament favorites, Alexander Zverev (+490). Just days away from his 38th birthday, it’s looking likely the all-time great played his last match at the stadium he dominated for so long 😥
Rafa Nadal waves goodbye to the crowd at Roland Garros.
Everyone on their feet for this legend.
The love from this crowd was just superb.
And it wasn’t just fans.
Legends. Peers. Tournament staff.
Everyone knows what this man means to tennis 🥹

Even without Nadal, you’ll still find most of the usual suspects atop the odds board to take home this year’s French Open title. Take a look at the current favorites on the men’s side 👇
French Open Winner Odds (subject to change)
Carlos Alcaraz: +210
Novak Djokovic: +370
Jannik Sinner: +410
Alexander Zverev: +490
Casper Ruud: +1000
Stefanos Tsitsipas: +1300
Fresh off his first career major victory at this year’s Australian Open, Jannik Sinner has emerged alongside Alcaraz and Djokovic as a surefire contender in any tournament he plays in. The future looks awfully bright for the 22-year-old as he pushes to become the world’s top-ranked player 💪

And after three straight French Open semifinal appearances, oddsmakers are also bullish on Zverev making another deep run this year…can he finally capture that elusive first Grand Slam title? 🤔

We’ve got a couple more rounds before the action in Paris really starts to heat up, but there’s still some intriguing matches coming up that you’re gonna want to tune into…if you’re awake in time 😴
American Frances Tiafoe became a household name after his run to the US Open semifinals back in 2022, but he hasn’t been playing his best tennis lately. The 25th seed in this tournament, he was pushed to the limit in his first round match, and he now finds himself as an underdog (+150) in the second round against unseeded Denis Shapovalov (-182)
On the topic of popular Americans, 15th seed Ben Shelton and his blazing serve will also take the court. The 21-year-old is a pretty solid favorite (-720), but while his opponent Kei Nishikori (+500) is well past his prime, he’s also no stranger to Grand Slam success 👀
Ben Shelton defeats Hugo Gaston and the french crowd on court 14.
Match started at 11am and it's finally over after two rain delays: 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

Shelton is joined in the Top-15 by fellow Americans 14th seed Tommy Paul and 12th seed Taylor Fritz, who are both set to play their second round matches on Thursday. Its been over 20 years since a US men’s player last won a Grand Slam…here’s hoping one of these guys can finally end that drought sooner rather than later 🤞
Trivia Question: Who was the last American men’s player to win a French Open?
