Basketball Blues In Phoenix
Man, it’s been a tough month for basketball fans out in Phoenix. If the Suns’ early playoff exit at the hands of the Dallas Mavericks wasn’t disappointing enough, now their sister squad, the Mercury, have seen their season get off to a rough start 😫
After reaching the WNBA Finals last year, the Mercury entered this season with a reinforced roster, high expectations and top-five title odds (+600)
However, they’ve gone just 2-7 (👈 take a look at the full WNBA standings) through their first nine games, and they’re currently in the midst of a six-game losing streak 🥶
We certainly haven’t seen the level of play we expected from Phoenix so far, especially after adding eight-time All-Star Tina Charles, and offensive dynamo Diamond DeShields, to a team that was already championship-caliber
With the addition of Charles this offseason, the Mercury now have FOUR Olympic Gold Medalists on their roster, including Diana Taurasi, Skylar Diggins-Smith and Brittney Griner
Griner, however, has yet to suit up this season, and unless you’re living under a rock you probably know why 😳
The absence of the star center is undoubtedly a contributor to the team's early struggles, but the play of Taurasi has also been a concern. Father Time may finally be catching up to the GOAT, as she's only dropping 13.2 PPG on 35.4% shooting, both career-lows
There is still plenty of time to turn this season around, and Taurasi and company will have the chance for a statement win tonight, when Eastern Conference Player of the Month Alyssa Thomas and the Connecticut Sun come to town
Trivia Question: Taurasi is the WNBA's all-time leading scorer with over 9,000 career points. Who ranks second among active players in career scoring? (answer below)

Other Games To Watch
There's plenty more WNBA action worth tuning into tonight, including some matchups with Commissioner’s Cup implications. Here are some of the biggest storylines for the evening's festivities👇
Spread: Sky -2.5
Moneyline: Sky -152 (bet $152, win $100), Dream +124
O/U: 156.5
Coming off the first title in franchise history, the Sky entered this season with repeat-or-bust expectations (+400 odds), and so far so good. But, ROY front-runner Rhyne Howard and the Dream are much improved this season, and will be a tough test for the defending champs 💪
Spread: Mystics -11.5
Moneyline: Mystics -900, Liberty +570
O/U: 154.5
After suffering four straight losing seasons, Liberty fans are waiting for the young and talented roster, led by Sabrina Ionescu, to take the next step. If early results are any indication, that leap won’t be this year, and it doesn't get any easier with Elena Delle Donne and the Mystics on tap tonight 😬

Trivia Answer: Among players currently on a WNBA roster, it's actually Taurasi's Mercury teammate, Tina Charles, who ranks second in scoring, checking in at sixth all-time with over 6,700 points
