What To Expect In The Biggest Playoff Game Of The Night

The Jazz were looking dead in the water only a game ago, but they fought to keep their season alive in Game 4. Can Luka and the Mavs take control of the series at home? ๐Ÿ† (3 min read)

Tonight's parlay is Celtics +1.5 @ Nets & Mavs -3 vs. Jazz. More info below on a chance to win $100 ๐Ÿ‘‡

Massive Game 5

The NBA playoffs are all about momentum, one win can jumpstart a series win, finals run and a banner being raised. As the Mavs-Jazz series heads back to Dallas, Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert's game-winning alley-oop in the closing seconds of Game 4 could prove to be the spark Utah needed ๐Ÿงจ

  • Much has been made of the Gobert x Mitchell pairing lacking chemistry, but the Jazz found a way to lock in with their season on the line

  • After giving up 39 points to Dallas in the third quarter, they clamped down to allow just 18 fourth quarter points ๐Ÿ”’

As for Dallas, its struggles down the stretch of Game 4 has made this series wide open. Despite the return of Luka Doncic, the Mavs could not get stops in the 4th quarter, and Gobert made just enough free throws to hold on. Take a look at the Game 5 lines ๐Ÿ‘‡

What To Watch

Utah has looked like a team on its last legs for most of this season. After an epic collapse at the hands of the Clippers (without Kawhi Leonard) in the 2021 playoffs, the Jazz barely made any offseason roster changes to better prepare themselves for playoff small-ball. That means sticking with Rudy Gobert ๐Ÿ‘‡

  • Gobert thrives at turning away shots in the paint, as his three Defensive Player of the Year awards will attest

  • Unfortunately, Utah's wings are all too aware of this fact, as their porous perimeter defense allows constant attacks of the basket

  • Smart offenses like the Mavs' will play a floor-spacing stretch big who will enjoy numerous open looks as a result of Gobert needing to protect the paint

The Jazz didn't have much of an answer for Dallas in Games 2 and 3, as Jalen Brunson (this is crazy) drove relentlessly to the rim for either a score or a pass to a wide-open shooter. While their wings faired better defensively in Game 4, the true key to their late run came on the offensive end ๐Ÿ”ฅ

  • Jordan Clarkson played 36 minutes off the bench and outscored the entire Dallas reserves

  • Mitchell wasn't efficient, but finished with a 23/6/7 stat-line

  • Gobert had 10 offensive rebounds, resulting in extra possessions and free throws

Trivia Question: Jordan Clarkson is the reigning Sixth Man of the Year, can you name the previous three winners before him? (answer below)

Welcome Back Luka

It's funny to act like welcoming back a player of Luka's caliber could ever be a problem, but the return of such a ball-dominant star requires the Mavs to adapt their game-plan ๐Ÿ“‹

  • Brunson introduced himself as legitimate offensive star and will seek star money this offseason with his masterful performances in Games 2 and 3

  • He was the pinnacle of efficiency, averaging 36.0 PPG with just one total turnover

  • Brunson still put up numbers in Game 4, but it was clear that his dip in the offensive hierarchy affected his rhythm in 7-18 shooting night

Dallas' secondary star will need to find his spots, but the true key to the Mavs' success is and will always be Luka Doncic. The Slovenian superstar enjoyed some of his usual magical moments, but he will need to find another gear to ensure a Game 5 win ๐Ÿ—ฃ

  • While Luka has become famous for his patented step-back threes, his greatest skill is using his brawn and guile for creative drives to the paint

  • Doncic utilizes a variety of dribble moves and well-timed pump fakes to open up runners and one-legged fadeaways, or spring perfect skip passes to perimeter shooters

  • He will need to get floor spacing big Maxi Kleber going again, whose hot shooting in games 2 and 3 was reminiscent of another German man ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ช
