Soccer Is Here

The fútbol season is upon us, specifically the big five in Europe. Just to catch you up, the English, German and French leagues kicked off last weekend, and today the Spanish and Italian leagues get underway. Here are the specific dates for the season 📆

  • Bundesliga: Aug. 5-May 27

  • Premier League: Aug. 5-May 28

  • Ligue 1: Aug. 5-June 3

  • La Liga: Aug. 12-June 4

  • Serie A: Aug. 13-June 4

Before we tackle La Liga and Bundesliga games slated for this afternoon, I'll touch on these two leagues' formats, and which clubs have dominated in recent years. Let's dive in ⚽️

Spanish La Liga

Spain's top division, La Liga, is made up of 20 teams that play a round-robin format, totaling 38 matches. The top four teams qualify for the following season's Champions League 👑

Two of the most dominant clubs in Spain are Real Madrid (35 titles) and Barcelona (26 titles), who have accounted for seven of the last eight championships

  • The question everyone continues to ask is — can Barcelona challenge Real Madrid in this post-Lionel Messi era?

  • The initial answer is no, mainly because it's hard to replace the greatest soccer player of all-time. Messi won ten La Liga trophies while playing for Barca 🐐

However, Robert Lewandowski, one of the best goal-scorers in the game, will now be suiting up for Barca, partly the reason why they are favorites at +120 to win in Spain. While all eyes will be on Barcelona, they don't play until tomorrow at 3PM EST, but there is one game on today if you need your La Liga fix. Peep this matchup 👇

  • Moneyline: Sevilla +135 (bet $100, win $135), Osasuna +220 (bet $100, win $220), Tie +210 (bet $100, win $210)

  • O/U: 2.5 Total Goals

Trivia Question: Since 2004-05, who is the only club to win La Liga besides Barcelona and Real Madrid? (answer below)

German Bundesliga

Not as popular as La Liga or the Premier League, Germany's Bundesliga contains the country's top 18 soccer teams all vying for the Meisterschale (aka the Champion's Plate) 🏆

  • The top four teams each year also qualify for the Champions League

  • However, the most fun involves the sixteenth place team in the division. They must participate in a two-match playoff, which will ultimately determine if that team plays in the Bundesliga next season 😬

One team has been the face of Bundesliga since its inception, and that's Bayern Munich. It's hard to compare to a dynasty like this, as Bayern has won ten straight titles, 32 all-time. The next closest club is Nürnberg with nine titles overall, the majority of which came in the 1920s 🇩🇪

Once again, Bayern (-500) is the heavy favorite to bring home the Bundesliga hardware, but we'll have to wait until Sunday to see this squad in action. In the meantime, the league has one game on tap today, check it out 👇SC Freiburg vs. Borussia Dortmund Betting Preview (subject to change)

  • Moneyline: Borussia Dortmund +120, SC Freiburg +200, Tie +260

  • O/U: 2.5 Total Goals

For My Parlay Gurus

Normally I'd be in favor of home-field advantage, but today, I'm going with both road warriors, Sevilla and Dortmund. These two teams finished in the top-5 of their respective leagues last season, so I expect them to continue to dominate this year. Check out my parlay 👇

  • Sevilla ML vs. Osasuna: +135

  • Dortmund ML vs. Freiburg: +200
