Wimbledon Update

Who doesn’t love an early round upset? Might as well call it July Madness over in London, because some of the best tennis players in the world didn’t make it out of Wimbledon’s opening week 😳

  • Alright I’ll admit, I was a little bummed when 19-year-old wunderkind and the women’s #7 seed Coco Gauff went down in the opening round. Other early victims include men’s #9 Taylor Fritz, as well as #4 Casper Ruud, who was fresh off a French Open finals appearance 🤯

Despite the handful of upsets, let’s face it; most of the big dogs at Wimbledon aren’t facing much adversity in their first couple matches. But with the field now thinning out, the pressure is starting to set in…well, unless your name is Novak Djokovic 😤

  • The three-headed race for the title of tennis’ GOAT might soon be a closed case; Novak’s 23rd Grand Slam title last month in France has him alone atop the all-time leaderboard, and he’s still playing like a guy capable of winning quite a few more

  • Could we see #24 this tournament? Early shakeups have only boosted his status as a favorite (-170), and here’s a reminder in case you’ve forgotten, his Wimbledon dominance recently 💪

As you might imagine Novak made quick work of his first two opponents, with a pair of straight-set victories. But Stan Wawrinka awaits in his next match, and there’s quite a bit of history between the two ⚔️

At 38 years old, Wawrinka is certainly closer to the twilight of his career than his prime, which saw him capture three Grand Slam titles in an era dominated by the Big Three. But he’s looked in form through the first two rounds, and he’s had the Joker’s number in the past 👀

I’ll confess I’m rooting for Stan to pull it off, but it’s safe to say the odds aren’t in his favor. Take a look at the lines for their third-round showdown, tentatively scheduled to start at 1:30pm EST 👇

  • Moneyline: Djokovic -4000, Wawrinka +1400

  • Expected Sets: Djokovic 3-0 (-210)
