Wimbledon Season

Wimbledon is upon us, and there's really nothing better than the opening days of any of the four major tournaments. The first round kicked off yesterday, and one of the favorites has already been bounced, as No. 7 Hubert Hurkacz lost to the unranked Spaniard, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, in five sets. The young Pole had the fifth-best odds to win the tournament at +1400 🚨

  • Last year, Novak Djokovic beat Matteo Berrettini in the finals. The No. 1 seed dropped a set yesterday, but ultimately advanced in four

  • Djokovic is only ranked No. 1 in this tournament because actual world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev was barred from competing in Wimbledon, as was every other Russian player

  • On the women's side, it's Iga Swiatek's tournament to lose (+155), as the 2021 winner, Ash Barty, retired a few months ago

  • Swiatek has won 35 matches in a row, including a title at the French Open earlier this month

Tennis futures are usually good bets, especially considering both No. 1 seeds are heavily favored to bring home a title. While you need them to win seven matches in a row to cash in, these players are in prime form and definitely worth a look πŸ‘‡

Men's Wimbledon Winner Odds (subject to change)

  • No. 1 Novak Djokovic: -140 (bet $140, win $100)

  • No. 5 Carlos Alcaraz: +1400

  • No. 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime: +1400

  • No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas: +1600

Novak's Dominance

After dominating 2021 with three Grand Slam wins, Djokovic still sits at 20 major titles almost a year later. Nadal has owned 2022 so far, taking home both the Australian and French Open to increase his total to 22. If there's one tournament to get Novak back on track, it's Wimbledon πŸ‘‡

  • Since 2011, Djokovic has won six of the last ten Wimbledon titles. Nadal has not won the London tournament since 2010

  • Novak has won the last three, beating Matteo Berrettini, Rodger Federer and Kevin Anderson dating back to 2018

  • Fan-favorite Andy Murray, who won yesterday, has won two of the four that Djokovic has not won since 2011, and comes into this year's draw unranked...and in Djoker's side of the bracket πŸ‘€

Djokovic should have a relatively easy time until the quarterfinals, where he'd face young sensation Carlos Alcaraz, who is ranked No. 5 and coming off a five set opening round win. We're a week or so away from that, but expect to see some familiar faces advance in the opening rounds of Wimbledon 🎾

Britain Stand Up

It's been 45 years since a British women has brought home a Wimbledon title on home court, with Virginia Wade being the last to do so back in 1977. In 2017, Johanna Konta was close, but ultimately fell to Venus Williams in the semifinals. However, this year there is definitely some hope πŸ‘‡

  • Emma Raducanu's emergence has been awesome to watch. Last year, she won the US Open at the age of 18 without dropping a single set

  • Yesterday, she advanced in straight sets in her Centre Court debut (peep the crowd's reaction), and lucky for her, she's on the opposite side of the bracket as No. 1 Iga Swiatek

  • At +1800, No. 10 Raducanu has the 6th-best odds to win Wimbledon. It's a steep price, but considering she was ranked 338th at this point last year, now might be the time for a British woman to break through in London πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§

It's definitely going to take some serious play to knock off Swiatek. She has two Grand Slam wins since 2020, but both have come at the French Open, so it's still up in the air if her dominance will transfer over to grass courts. Only time will tell, and fingers crossed that we get to see these two meet in the finals, where the total age would be just 40 years old 🀯
