Thursday Night Football Preview

First place in the AFC West is on the line tonight, as the 8-5 Chargers are set to host the 9-4 Chiefs in a primetime matchup with massive postseason implications. Here’s how the lines are shaping up šŸ‘‡

  • Spread: Chiefs (-3) @ Chargers

  • Moneyline: Chiefs -160 (bet $160, win $100), Chargers +135 (bet $100, win $135)

  • Over/Under: 52

These teams met back in Week 3, with the Chargers escaping Kansas City with a 30-24 road victory. The Chiefs may hold a slim division lead at the moment, but if LA can pull off a season sweep over their division rivals, they’ll put themselves in a great position to end the season on top of the AFC West 🌓

Returning To Prime Form

The Chiefs certainly won’t relinquish the AFC West crown without a fight. They’ve had the division in a stranglehold recently, and if the season ended today they’d capture their sixth straight title. But at times this year, there’s been at least mild concern their recent run of success could be coming to an end šŸ¤”

  • After an embarrassing 27-3 loss to the Titans in Week 7, the 3-4 Chiefs, who entered the season as the Super Bowl favorite (+600), saw their odds dip to a season-low +1400

  • Kansas City has won six straight since then, and they now have the second-best odds (+550) to bring home the Lombardi Trophy, trailing only the Bucs (+450)

  • Despite their stretch of underwhelming play, they have yet to be an underdog this season

With all the talent Kansas City has, it makes sense why a turnaround almost felt inevitable. But interestingly enough, the resurgence hasn’t been powered by their typically potent offense. It’s about time the Chiefs’ defense gets the credit they deserve 🚧

  • During their win streak, Kansas City is giving up just 10.8 PPG

  • They’ve held three straight opponents to nine points, allowing just two combined touchdowns

And while they’ve been less explosive than usual on the other side of the ball, don’t feel too bad for KC’s playmakers. Even in a down year by his standards, Mahomes is still on pace for over 4,700 yards and 35 TDs 🤫

Trivia question: the last time a team other than the Chiefs won the AFC West was in 2015; who was it? (answer below)

Let Herbert Cook

The Kansas City D may be on a roll, but they’ll have their hands full tonight against Justin Herbert. The Chargers’ second-year signal-caller is playing as well as any QB in the league right now

  • Over his last six games, Herbert has completed over 71% of his passes for 1,828 yards, 14 touchdowns and a passer rating of 107.2

  • Stats not good enough for ya? Just take one more look at this throw from last week 😳

As is the case with just about any young quarterback, inconsistency is still prevalent in Herbert’s game. But when he’s on, this offense is as good as any in the league

  • In their three most recent (they are 3-1 in their last four games) victories they’re averaging 39.6 PPG

  • In wins this season, Herbert is averaging 321 YPG to go along with 23 TDs and just 3 INTs. But in losses, he’s putting up just 250 YPG with a 7-8 TD/INT ratio

If Herbert is on his A game tonight, watch out; the Chargers are 7-0 when he has a passer rating north of 100 āš”ļø

For My Parlay Gurus

Tonight’s matchup could go either way, but one thing I’m banking on? Both superstar quarterbacks putting on a laser show. Peep the aerial attack parlay I’m rocking withšŸ‘‡

  • Patrick Mahomes over 281.5 passing yards: -113

  • Justin Herbert over 287.5 passing yards: -113

This parlay would net $264 if you put down $100 — and if this hits, make sure to email [email protected] for $100. First come, first serve šŸ˜‰

Trivia question: In Peyton Manning’s final season back in 2015, the Broncos went 12-4 to win the AFC West. They would go on to defeat the Panthers in a low-scoring Super Bowl 50
