Best Scorers In NCAAM History πŸ€

Can you name any of the top-3 scorers in college basketball this season? I couldn't, so it got me thinking about past scoring title winners dating all the way back to Steph Curry's famous 2008-09 season at Davidson. Shoutout LeBron James, and tap in to test your NCAAM knowledge 🧠 (5 min read)

College Scoring Title

First of all, shoutout to LeBron James for becoming the All-Time leading scorer in the NBA. If you missed the game, here was the record-breaking shot 🐐

I'm sure there's a lot to read on LeBron today - I had already written this up so here it goes πŸ˜…. I was looking at the list of this season's top scorers in college basketball and realized I barely know any of them. Purdue's Zach Edey, Gonzaga's Drew Timme, Eastern Michigan's Emoni Bates and Oral Roberts' Max Abmas are probably the only players in the top-15 you know. Take a look πŸ‘‡

I don't watch too much of Detroit Mercy, Penn, UAB or Oral Roberts basketball, which is unfortunate because their top guys are putting up some serious PPG numbers. This got me thinking - who are the most recent scoring champions that your average fan would know? It's a pretty short list; since Steph Curry led the nation in scoring back in 2008-09 at 28.6 PPG, these are likely the only players you'd know πŸ€

  • 2010-11: Jimmer Fredette, BYU, 28.9 PPG

  • 2013-14: Doug McDermott, Creighton, 26.7 PPG

  • 2017-18: Trae Young, Oklahoma, 27.4 PPG

The full list features guys like Peter Kiss from Bryant, Max Abmas, Markus Howard from Marquette and Chris Clemons from Campbell - clearly dudes who can get buckets, but not at the next level like Curry and Trae Young to the point where they become household names. Even Zach Edey, who is having one of the most dominant college basketball seasons in recent memory, might not get NBA looks. With that said, here are some of the top scorers from this season that should hear their names called come June 🀞

  • Azoulas Tubelis, Arizona: 20.8 PPG, 17th in the country

  • Jalen Wilson, Kansas: 20.7 PPG, 19th

  • Kris Murray, Iowa: 20.5 PPG, 20th

  • Trayce Jackson-Davis, Indiana: 19.8 PPG, 27th

This is rather obvious, but the theme for those four players is that they play in top conferences in the country, are getting buckets, and fit the mold of a modern NBA player. College bigs like Zach Edey and Hunter Dickinson don't see their names on recent mock drafts, and Drew Timme slides in as one of the last projected picks. With the G-League, International play and Overtime Elite, it's getting harder for top college players to get to the league 😬

Trivia Question: Max Abmas has a chance to win the college scoring title for a second time - can you name the last player to lead the country in PPG in two different seasons?

Speaking of the Draft

Tonight's slate of college basketball games isn't too exciting, but since we just touched on the NBA draft, I figured we'd take a look at Alabama. Sitting at No. 3 in the country with a 20-3 overall record, and an impressive 10-0 in SEC play, Bama's season feels a little under the radar πŸ’°

Coach Oats has done a great job turning this Bama program around in just four seasons. Since 2020, he's had four players drafted - Collin Sexton is probably the most well-known alumni in the league, but he was picked before Oats took over. These are the players who he developed πŸ‘‡

  • Kira Lewis Jr. - drafted by the Pelicans in 2020

  • Herb Jones - drafted by the Pelicans in 2021

  • Keon Ellis - drafted by the Kings in 2022

  • J.D. Davison - drafted by the Celtics in 2022

Outside of Herb Jones, none of those players see consistent playing time, but that trend will change in the upcoming 2023 draft. Brandon Miller is one of the best players in the country, averaging almost 19 PPG, and he's only a freshman. Most recent mock drafts have him going as high as No. 3 πŸ‘€

His running mate, Noah Clowney, is also a freshman averaging 10 PPG and 8 RPG. Mocks have him going towards the end of the lottery at around the 15th pick. This is an exciting Alabama team with title aspirations - they are -600 to win the SEC and +1000 to win it all, good for the third best odds in the country. Peep the odds vs. Florida tonight πŸ‘‡

  • Spread: Bama -8.5

  • Moneyline: Bama -430 (bet $430, win $100), Florida +330 (bet $100, win $330)

  • O/U: 148.5

  • When: 9PM EST on ESPN2

For My Parlay Gurus

I can't take up your time hyping up Alabama and then not pick them tonight. Florida is coming off a tough stretch vs. Kansas State, Tennessee and Kentucky, and now have to travel to Tuscaloosa. Tough schedule. Give me Bama and let's throw in my Wolverines at home vs. Nebraska - take a look πŸ‘‡

  • Alabama -8.5 vs. Florida: -120

  • Michigan -11.5 vs. Nebraska: -110

$100 on this bet would win you $250 β€” if we hit, make sure you email [email protected] for a chance to win up to $100*. Many will enter, only some will win πŸ˜‰
